If you haven’t yet had a chance to check out the historic ships or festivities in Southeastern Connecticut or Newport this weekend, don’t worry. Events are scheduled right through the vessels’ departures, most of which are scheduled for Monday, July 9, 2012.

In fact, the ships’ departure, or “Sail Away Day” is your chance to see the ships and crew off at OpSail CT throughout Monday (July 9) morning and early afternoon. Good vantage points are Waterfront Park, Pequot Avenue, Fort Trumbull State Park and Ocean Beach Park in New London and Avery Point and Eastern Point in Groton. Scheduled departure times from New London piers south along the Thames River, subject to change, are:

Regulus 11:00 a.m.
A.J. Meerwald 11:00 a.m.
Spirit 11:00 a.m.
Amistad 11:30 a.m.
Wolf 11:30 a.m.
Brillliant 12 noon
Appledore V 12 noon
Cisne Branco 12:30 p.m.
New Horizons12:30 p.m.
Tyrone 1:00 p.m.
Ticonderoga 1:30 p.m.

Monday July 9th is also one of the best times to see – and perhaps even hitch a ride on one of – the tall ships in Rhode Island, in the Parade of Sail. As of this writing on Saturday evening, limited tickets are still available. Boarding is at 10:15 am on Monday for the parade which goes from 11am-4pm. The parade is scheduled to go on rain or shine, but right now the weather looks like it will be sunny and cooler than it’s been lately with temperatures in the low 80’s. If you don’t want to actually be in the parade, but want the full experience, there were also a few tickets left to the Sunday brunch at Fort Adams.
