For the third time since 2009, Newport’s NYYC is hosting the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup this month. The festivities and ceremonies kick off this Friday, September 7th, with the five days of actual racing scheduled to begin on Tuesday the 10th.

According to the event’s press information, the NYYC Invitational Cup, presented by Rolex, has renewed the tradition of international Corinthian competition among yacht clubs. Raced in the one-design NYYC Swan 42s – identically tuned and equipped with supplied sails – the biennial Invitational Cup is held over five days on Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound.

The 2011 champion, the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, is returning to defend its title with former America’s Cup skipper Terry McLaughlin heading up the team. The fleet will also include the host club, NYYC, which finished second in 2011 after winning the inaugural event in 2009, as well as 15 invited international clubs and three American yacht clubs determined by a qualification series.

A Parade of Nations through Newport Harbor will take place on Saturday morning, September 14th, at 0900. What a great day for sailing fans spending the weekend in Newport – you can check out the parade Saturday morning, and then head to the Newport Boat Show for the rest of the day, which is happening through Sunday.
