Newport And More This Weekend

The first major show of the fall boat show season (sorry Atlantic City), and one of the country’s largest nautical events, kicks off this weekend right here in New England.

This year is the 42nd annual edition of the Newport International Boat Show, which runs today, September 13 through Sunday, September 16, 2012, and features more than 600 sailboats and powerboats in the water.

Multiple waterfront facilities along America’s Cup Avenue host the Show including Newport Yachting Center, Oldport Marine, Bannister’s Wharf and Bowen’s Wharf.

Meanwhile, there are a couple of events on the Connecticut coast that are worth mentioning, especially in anticipation of next week’s big Norwalk Boat Show (which also features hundreds of boats in the water and on land).

This Saturday, the Riverlights Boat Parade is scheduled to take place on the Housatonic River at approximately 7 p.m. The parade will start at the I-95 Moses-Wheeler Bridge and proceed down river to the Knapps Landing Restaurant in Stratford. It’s a rare treat to see a lighted boat parade other than at Christmas time, so this is worth checking out (or participating in!) Rain date is Sunday the 16th. Check our calendar for event details on this an other nautical happenings in the Northeast.

Also happening this Saturday in southern Connecticut is the Indian Harbor Yacht Club Classic Yacht Regatta in Greenwich.
