Last week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed new legislation to require the operators of all powered boats to pass an eight-hour boating safety course.

The law, which kicks in on May 1st 2014, will initially apply only to boaters 18 years old and younger, and carry penalties ranging from $100 to $250.
