Hmmm, New London or Newport for Tall Ships

Tall Ship Events To Compete-For-Feet Weekend After 4th Of July

I was excited to see an email in my inbox today announcing the lineup for the Ocean State Tall Ships® Festival 2012 that is coming to Newport this summer. The email told me that there are presently eleven ships scheduled to attend the festival, which is expected to bring thousands of visitors to Newport.

But then I realized that the Tall Ships event in Newport is scheduled for July 6 – 9, 2012 – the same exact dates of the final stop of OpSail CT 2012 – which the state of Connecticut is banking will bring HUNDREDS of thousands of visitors to the city of New London. In fact, one report in the Day stated that organizers are hoping for 500,000 to 750,000 visitors to the city.

There are crowds in Newport year round, even without events like this. New London, on the other hand, may be sort of hanging its hat on this event. That same Day article stated that some called OpSail 2000 Connecticut’s biggest tourism draw of the decade! Unfortunately, this conflict has the potential to limit the draw of both events, as folks from CT that might have gone to Newport will just go see the tall ships closer to home, and vice versa.

As for me, if there is time between boating, picnics and sporting events, I may try to attend both events (don’t worry, there will be pictures!)

What about you? Will you attend the event that is closer to your home? Will you go to either or both? OpSail is in Boston the week before (June 30 to July 5, 2012), so I’d be surprised to see folks from Boston or points north coming down to New London or Newport for either event, but I know we’d welcome them here in Connecticut. I think all the events, which commemorate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, will be amazing to have right here in New England and worth your time to check them out.
