But it’s only August

Maine fall foliage

While combing through my email inbox today, I came across a newsletter about New England travel that caught my eye because it included tips for fall foliage cruises.

Now, New England and upstate New York are about the best places in the world to see fall foliage, especially from a boat, but isn’t it a little early to start thinking about next season? It’s only August 1st for crying out loud.

I guess it’s not too early if you don’t have the luxury of spontaneously planning a trip up a river on your own boat. Yes, it’s true, some people actually have to make reservations to go on a boat. And, of course, some boat owners prefer to go on other people’s boats. And these cruises probably get crowded and you have to book early to reserve your seats. With those admissions in mind, following are the recommended boat tours from Kim Knox Beckius’ article:

New York

American Cruise Lines
Cruise the Hudson River in New York State this fall aboard the American Star, American Glory or Independence. A dozen fall departure dates are available, and the itinerary features Hudson River ports of call including West Point, Catskill, Tarrytown, Albany and New York City during the beautiful fall foliage season.

Hardy Boat Fall Coastal Cruise
Watch the leaves… and the seals go by on a Hardy Boat Cruises fall excursion from New Harbor, Maine. Be sure to call ahead for reservations.

Fall Foliage Sunday Brunch Cruises
Cruise the Connecticut River aboard the Lady Katharine this fall and enjoy a Sunday brunch buffet and live entertainment with your leaves. Cruises depart from Haddam or Middletown, Connecticut. Check the schedule for dates and departure times and locations, and call ahead for reservations. Special events, such as a Murder Mystery Dinner Cruise, are also on the fall schedule.

New Hampshire

Isles of Shoals Fall Sightseeing Cruises
Set out from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on a narrated sightseeing cruise of the islands and lighthouses in Portsmouth Harbor this fall. Or, enjoy a memorable dining experience with the Star Island Jazz Brunch Cruise on September 29, 2013.
